Contaminated soils are required to be treated and remediated.
Soil remediation can be performed in several different methods, such as:
- Excavation and evacuation – excavation of the contaminated soil and its evacuation to an approved waste management site.
- Biological treatment:
- Bioremediation – changing of environmental conditions of the soil in order to allow microoragnisms growth and activity for derivatization of target contaminants.
- Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) – a physical process of transferring contaminant mass from the solid phase (soil) or liquid phase (water) to the gaseous phase for treatment above-ground.
- Bio-Venting (BV) – microbial derivatization of contaminants based on the natural microorganism population in the soil while adding oxygen and sometimes different nutrients into the soil.
- Chemical treatment:
- Solvent extraction – extraction of organic contaminants into a liquid organic phase using circulation and additional reagents.
- Chelation – heavy metals extraction from the solid phase into the liquid phase by binding them to a chelating agent, which demonstrates high affinity to the selected metal.
- Oxidation – addition of strong oxidants such as hydrogen peroxide, ozone, potassium permanganate or persulphates which derive the contaminants in groundwater.
- Pump and treat – pumping contaminated groundwater and transferring them through a treatment system for contaminants absorption.
- Physical treatment:
- Solidification/ stabilization – a technology based on the reaction between a binding material to the soil for stopping/ preventing/ reducing contaminant mobility.
